Executive Summary

Healthcare is one of the most highly targeted industries by cyber criminals, with attacks including ransomware, data theft, and business email compromise (BEC), among others. New ransomware attacks against healthcare organizations across the world are disclosed almost daily, such as Great Plains Health in the United States (November 2019), Rouen University Hospital in France (also in November), and two health alliances in Australia (September 2019). Hospitals account for one-third of data breaches in the United States, and the industry has faced increasing threats during 2019. BEC attacks, initiated through successful phishing and other attacks, lead to data theft, snooping, and unauthorized access to patient data. Attacks result in numerous negative outcomes, including service delivery disruption, high recovery costs, and even business termination, among others.

Cybersecurity in Healthcare – Webinar https://ostermanresearch.com/2020/02/20/webinar-cybersecurity-healthcare-egress/ Thu, 20 Feb 2020 03:00:00 +0000 https://ostermanresearch.com/?p=558 Sponsored by: Egress

Healthcare is one of the most highly targeted industries by cybercriminals, with attacks including phishing, ransomware, and business email compromise (BEC), among many others. New attacks against healthcare organizations across the world are disclosed almost daily leading to data theft, snooping, and unauthorized access to patient data.

Email is a key threat vector in healthcare cyber security: of the 584 cases currently under investigation by the US Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (as of late January 2020), 40 percent of these are the result of problems with email. And, 12 percent of these email-related cases are the result of “Unauthorized Access/Disclosure”.

Consequently, email protection and best practices for email use must be primary focus areas for any organization in the healthcare supply chain – hospitals, clinics, physician’s offices, benefits administrators, insurance companies, government agencies and others.

We will discuss the key issues in managing security in healthcare, why email protection is key in protecting the integrity of healthcare data, and we will answer your questions on this critical topic.
